The article presents a complex diagnostic imaging of pleuritis with use of traditional Xray methods and contemporary advanced modalities such as computed tomography and ultrasonography. Mechanisms of the pleural fluid's spread in the pleural cavity are described depending on patient's position. The abilities of imaging modalities in distinguishing fluids of different nature are also available. A particular point is a diagnostic of encapsulated pleuritis. Less known signs on the ground of which one can differentiate between pleural effusion, ascites and subdiaphragmatic abscess are described. These are “diaphragm sign”, “interface sign”, “bare sign”, “displaced crus sign”.
