Transcutaneous sclerotherapy for solid solitary benign thyroid neoplasms

The results of sclerotherapy performed in 133 patients with solitary space-occupying thyroid lesions are presented. There were 31 patients with primary nodular goiter, 24 patients with recurrent nodular goiter and 78 patients with adenoma and autonomously functioning colloid nodules. Space-occupying lesions were solid, i.e. ultrasonically, thyroid tissue made 90% and more. The nodule/tumor volume ranged from 4 to 48 cm3. Ethanol was injected in 1–3 ml per dose every 17–30 days up to a total dose of at least 40% in respect to the initial nodule volume. After a follow-up of 3 years, a positive effect of sclerotherapy was noted. The nodule/tumor volume decreased by 70–80%. Morphological characteristic of tumor, nodule volume, internal echo pattern are factors for predicting the efficiency of sclerotherapy. An overdose of alcohol does not affect the efficiency of sclerotherapy.
