Object: To compare ultrasonography (US) with clinical examination in the detection of abnormalities of periarticular tissues of a knee joint in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: 50 patients with RA and 76 patients with OA underwent clinical and ultrasonographic examination of seven points in the both knees – quadriceps tendon, superior and inferior poles of patella, medial and lateral ligaments, “pes anserinus”, tendons of the biceps and semimembranosus muscles. Thickness of the structures, bony erosion, and enthesophyte (bony spur) were evaluated. Results: Ultrasonography exceeded clinical examination in detection of the connective-tissue structures' injuries of a knee joint. There are two types of enthesitis with clinical and sonographic signs. There was a correlation between ultrasonic findings and parameters of the main disease.
