The purpose of this work was an introduction of the results of the 5-years observation of diagnostics and treatment of patients with metastasis in liver with different primary tumor localization, and comparison of sonographic and microscopic features of metastatic lesions. This comparison revealed that the ultrastructure of vessel walls in hyperechoic metastasis differs from such in hypoechoic ones, because of an absence of foramina in a vessel wall – pores, which specify the echogenicity of a lesion. Regenerative potential of a liver explains the fact that a damage of plenty of hepatocytes doesn't always lead to clinical and biochemical changes. Clinical manifestation appears when a total amount of damaged cells reaches of a certain “critical mass”. In the case of liver diseases functional tests have less self-descriptiveness than they do at other diseases. There are very few tests able to evaluate of a specific liver function. Most of them testify a change of activity, but not to a specific malfunction. Evaluation of functional tests results is complicated by the fact that the defined changes might be a consequence of other organs damages. In all unclear cases a biopsy must be performed as the last part of preoperative diagnostics.
