The modern conception about gastritis is described. A new international classification of gastritis, based on an accepted on IX international congress of gastroenterologists in 1990 in Sydney (Australia) (so-called Sydney's system) is given. The author has shown a complexity of a problem, an uncertainty and an incompetence of many morphological and clinical criteria of gastritis. In author's opinion “gastritis” is a complex conception, including besides true inflammation, different functional states, in particular, changes of secretory activity and motility of a stomach as well as some dystrophic and dysplastic processes. The author regards incompetent a considering such independent diseases as Crohn's disease, sarcoidosis and Wegener's granulomatosis as gastritis. Some variants of glandular hypertrophy of a gastric mucosa which are mistakenly considered as hypertrophic gastritis are described. The article gives a description of X-ray patterns of some X-ray positive forms of gastritis.
